CONSTITUTIONALISM, THE RULE OF LAW & DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE: A CONVERSATION WITH PROFESSOR THULI MADONSELA
On 10 July 2020, Mary-Jean Nleya (2019-2020 Open Internet for Democracy Leader) interviewed Professor Thuli Madonsela. Madonsela is a professor of law and the law faculty trust chair in social justice at Stellenbosch University, South Africa as well as the former South African Public Protector (2009 – 2016). Among other topics, the interview discusses the constitutionality of the lockdown regulations in South Africa in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in light of the open letter (dated 4 June 2020) that Madonsela wrote to the South African president. Madonsela also provided her insights on the importance of viewing information communication technologies, namely the open internet, through a democratic and social justice lens. The discussion also examines the Black Lives Matter protests that started in the US and have swept across the world. Madonsela also reflects on her time as the public protector of South Africa.
